Head of Department - Moira Chilton

Introduction

The Geography Department is a strong and successful department in the school and gains very good examination results at both GCSE and A Level. The subject is taught as a separate discipline throughout the school by a team of three specialist geographers and is a popular option at GCSE and A Level. There are two specialist rooms on each site.

Future fieldwork provision will form an integral part of the curriculum with local and there are day visits for KS3 and KS4 and residential at KS5.

GCSE Geography

What will I learn?

  • The effect of weather and climate on peoples lives
  • How people interact with ecosystems, both to conserve and exploit
  • How the global hydrological cycle works, how it supplies our fresh water and the landforms it creates
  • The natural and human hazards caused by rainfall and water supply and the conflicts caused by human activity
  • How and why the quality of life and standard of living varies between different people and different areas of the world
  • The provision of services in a town and how this affects quality of life Who makes planning decisions and what conflicts are caused
  • How employment structures vary in time and place
  • How development is measured and the effects of global trade and aid

What is the structure of the course?

The course is divided into four units:

  • Climate, Environment and People
  • Water, Landforms and People
  • People and Place
  • People, Work and Development

Two exam papers: - 75% (each lasting 1 hour 30 minutes)

A revision paper - 45%

A decision making paper - 30%

Two pieces of coursework: - 25%

One following a field trip - 15%
