What if I want to discuss my child's progress?
The School welcomes an active interest by parents and carers in our students' education. Parents are sent a half-termly report of students' progress and effort in each subject. If you have any queries or concerns, you may contact subject teachers via the school office at any time. Each year group has a parents consultation evening. Additionally, Open Clinics are held on the first Monday of each month on which the school is open. Parents are welcome to visit the school without a prior appointment from 4.30 pm until closure at 6.00 pm on these evenings. Details of the dates of both of these are published on the school calendar at the start of each year.
Can I take my child out of school for a family holiday?
In line with recommendations by the London Borough of Enfield, Edmonton County School does not authorise holidays in term time.

Homework
We consider homework to be an integral part of our students' educational experience and a natural extension of classroom study. Homework helps students to improve their organisational skills and encourages self-discipline. Students receive a student planner, for recording their homework on a regular basis. Parents can support their child by checking that homework is completed fully and by discussing homework tasks.
Complaints
We encourage parents to take any concerns to the relevant teacher or head of department / learning in the first instance. If necessary complaints should then go to the head of the upper or lower site, or the headteacher, who will give advice on procedure. If a parent feels that this has been unsuccessful then the matter should be taken to the Governing Body. Ifa parent is still dissatisfied they should then make contact with the Local Education Authority. The Secretary of State will only consider complaints what have gone through these stages.
If you wish to have a copy of the School's Complaints Procedure please contact the school.

Can students bring a mobile phone to school?
The school discourages students from bringing mobile phones into school. All mobile phones that are brought into school should be placed in the school office at the start of the day and collected at the end of the day. The School does not take any responsibility if mobile phones are brought into the school and lost or stolen if not handed into the office.

Educational jargon?
We are aware that there is a lot of educational jargon used in school, hopefully this list will help to clarify some of the terms we use.
Key Stage (KS)
Your child's progress through school is measured in Key Stages. Key Stage 1 covers pupils from 5 to 7, Key stage 2 from 7 to 11, Key stage 3 from 11 to 14 and Key stage 4 from 14 -16.
SEN
Special Educational Needs
IEP
Individual Education Plan. Your child may be given one of these if it is felt necessary for them to have their progress more closely monitored for a while. IEPs are written by the Inclusion Department in conjunction with support staff and teaching staff and are reviewed on a regular basis with parents.
National Curriculum
The National Curriculum applies to pupils of compulsory school age in community and foundation schools, and voluntary aided and voluntary controlled schools. It sets out what should be taught in each Key Stage and provides attainment targets against which children's progress can be measured. There is a National Curriculum for every subject, except Religious Studies, the content of which is governed by the LEA.
LEA
Local Education Authority (ours is Enfield)
SATs
Standard Assessments Tasks. These are the formal tests taken by children at the end of year 9 when pupils complete Key Stage 3.
Ofsted
Office for Standards in Education. The body which inspects state funded schools. Our most recent inspection was in September 2006 and a summary of the report is available on request from the school.
