Head of Key Stage 3 Mathematics: Loulla Christofi

Information about Key Stage 3 Mathematics:

At ECS, Key Stage 3 Mathematics is taught over two years to allow students more time to prepare for their GCSE examinations. In Year 7 and Year 8 onwards students are grouped in accordance with current progress and attainment – appropriate movement between groups continues until Year 11 to ensure all students reach their true potential.

What students learn:

Students will be given opportunities to develop skills in logical thinking and problem solving. They will study many of the concepts already learnt in more detail as well as many new areas of mathematics. Teachers will continue to encourage students to apply structure and methodical workings out to written calculations.

The mathematics curriculum is broken into the following topics:

  • Number including basic manipulation (multiplication, addition, subtraction, division), decimals, fractions, percentages, ratios, indices
  • Algebra including solving equations, graphs, sequences, functions, simultaneous equations
  • Geometry including 3D shapes, transformation, angle facts
  • Data Handling including statistical averages, graphical representation, hypothesis testing and surveys

Assessment:

Students are formally assessed each half term using a test, an activity or a mental test. Informal assessments are continuously carried out by class teachers by means of questioning, classwork as well as weekly homework.

Use these progression ladders along with student profiles to monitor progress and set targets to help reach the next level:

Algebra L3-5 | Algebra L5-8
Data Handling L3-5 | Data Handling L5-8
Number L3-5 | Number L5-8
