 Overview

Back to History

In Year 7 students will begin with a short Introduction to History unit that will develop students core historical skills as well as introduce students to some local history.  After this, students will study a shot thematic unit on Migration to Britain before 1066. This will take students on a journey from the time of the Roman invasions of Britain through to the Anglo-Saxons and the Vikings. Students will study each of these groups and their impact on Britain. Studying a thematic topic will allow students to be adequately prepared for their GCSE History study as one of the units contains a thematic study. Similarly, Year 8 students will carry out a thematic study on the lives of African-Americans through time. This will begin with looking at Ancient African Empires and follow the journey of African Americans from the period of slaver up to the modern period by looking at significant events such as the Rodney King case, the election of Barack Obama and the Black Lives Matter Campaign. After both year groups have completed these units of thematic study, they will begin to study shorter units which will test students on other historical skills that are required for GCSE History. For instance, students will have to understand the concept of significance. To achieve this, students at Year 7 will study the Islamic Golden Age while at Year 8 students will have to study the Mustafa Kemal Ataturk. Furthermore, students will have to develop their ability to analyse sources. This will be accomplished in Year 7 by studying the British Empire and in Year 8 by studying the Vietnam War. Additionally, students will enhance their understanding of the concepts of causation and consequence. Students will develop their understanding of these concepts by studying the Norman Conquest of England in Year 7 and the First World War in Year 8. Finally, students will have to evaluate and carry out enquiries into different historical interpretations. Students will have the opportunity to develop this skill in Year 7 through the study of the Tudors and in Year 8 through the study of the Suffragettes. We hope that the study of these topics will adequately equip students with the skills necessary to succeed at GCSE History as well as creating a passion for History amongst KS3 students.
