UKMT Junior Maths Challenge

Recently 51 students from Year 7 and Year 8 took part in the UK Junior Maths Challenge set by the UK Mathematics Trust.  The challenge was very difficult and involved problem solving of a range of mathematical situations.

Particular congratulations go to Emily Ravetto (Year 8) who was awarded ‘Best in School’ after achieving a high score of 84.  Two of our students received a Gold Award, 8 Silver and 12 Bronze in this year’s UKMT Intermediate Maths Challenge, which saw over 250,000 pupils from across the UK sit this important National challenge.

The Secondary Count on Us Challenge 2016

A group of Year 8 students represented Edmonton County School in the 2016 Secondary Count on Us Challenge, Mayor’s Award at City Hall on Wednesday 13th April.

The students competed in three challenging rounds based on geometry, algebra and number. Out of 12 schools, our students scored the highest points in the first round, the Tower of Hanoi and Frogs routines. The routine was the quickest and most synchronised, demonstrating the hard work the students had put in during their weekly practice sessions over the Spring Term. It was a terrific performance considering the students were some of the youngest in the tournament, competing well against their Year 9 counterparts. Overall the students displayed cohesion, innovation and resilience during this year’s challenge and performed superbly.

Comments from the students

The Count on Us challenge was a new experience; fun, challenging and a chance to meet other mathematicians in London. I would recommend this to all Year 8 and 9 mathematicians to experience a new side to maths

Emily Ravetto

The Count on Us challenge improved my confidence significantly and my maths skills. Furthermore it made me realise that maths could be fun and is very important to succeed in life

Yaseer Mollabux

The ‘Count on Us’ challenge, sponsored by the Jack Petchey Foundation, vastly accumulated my knowledge about maths. The activities were and enjoyable and very challenging. An opportunity to compete with many schools gave me noticeable confidence. I hope to enter next year, good view of the Tower Bridge as well

Dynamic mathematics challenge day for year 8 students

Last week twelve talented mathematicians from Year 8 were invited to participate in a Maths challenge day at a local Enfield school.

The activities were all hands on and the students learnt about the importance of communication skills and effective team work. They enjoyed the puzzle activities that focused on achievement rather than competition and the students were genuinely challenged to solve puzzles by trying a range of strategies to reach a solution. This was highlighted by one student who said ‘We all enjoyed the puzzles as they were confusing but were fun to finish them all’. Members of staff noted that all students were focused and motivated for the whole time and they said it was lovely to see different learning styles being catered for so that everyone had a chance to show their own learning strengths.
