Overview

Students wishing to continue on to the second part of the course, to complete the A Level in Year 13, will be required to pass the AS course in year 12. Here, students continue to study Pure and Applied Mathematics in Further depth.

The Maths faculty at Edmonton County School follow the Edexcel exam board for A Level Assessment. Students. There are some key formulae that students are expected to memorise that teachers will help students to learn.

The final A Level grade will be fully dependent on the three exams sat at the end of year 13 as per below.

AS/A Level Further Maths: (This counts as another A Level)

Further Maths students study a variety of modules which include Further Pure, Mechanics, Statistics and Decision Mathematics. Students must achieve a Grade 8 at GCSE and recommendations will be requested from GCSE teachers regarding your suitability for this course. A Level Maths must be chosen as well as this course, as per the entry criteria. The Faculty currently offers this as both a stand-alone AS course (1year) or a full A Level course (2 years).

Mathematical Studies (Level 3 Qualification)

There are many concepts learnt at GCSE, that are studied at a higher level. The is a two-year course, where you are taught for 6 hours a fortnight, it focuses on enabling students to improve their knowledge of Mathematics and understand how to apply it to situations in the ‘real’ world, such as finance and engineering, as well as a major emphasis on problem-solving. The course also supports other post-16 subjects that require maths knowledge, such as Science, Geography, Business Studies, Psychology, Economics and Information Technology. In particular, it aims to develop students’ understanding and ability to apply mathematics, and consists of:

  • Analysis of data
  • Personal finance
  • Estimation
  • Critical analysis of data and models
  • 4 optional modules

Assessment

There are two equally weighted final written public examinations (1hr 30mins each) at the end of the second Year. However, there are continual internal assessments throughout both years to ensure students are making sufficient progress as well as an end of year exam in the first year.

Successful completion of these courses will enable progression onto both further and higher education, a Modern Apprenticeship or employment in a range of industries. No employer is going to ignore an advanced level qualification in Maths – this is a strong and much valued subject. If you are considering a career or further study in ICT, Accountancy, Engineering, Economics and the Sciences you should seriously consider continuing to study Maths.
