Message from the Headteacher

Dear Parents and Carers

I start this Newsletter with wonderful news about one of our Year 13 students from 2018. Sami Berisha has been
offered a full scholarship to study Journalism at Northwestern University, Illinois. This University is one of the
world’s leading places to study and Sami has beat the international competition not only to secure a place, but with
a full scholarship too. I should also add that Sami was offered a place at Oxford University too! He is a shining
example of how ambition and hard work lead to amazing outcomes and is an inspiration to us all, but I hope in
particular to the students of Edmonton County.
Whilst there is no snow forecasted for London, it is coming to places in the UK. I therefore take this opportunity to
remind you of our policy
In the event of severe weather, the school will be open for all students and staff who can get here safely.
The school will only be closed if the weather is so bad that it is inconceivable that any significant number
of personnel can get to work safely – this judgement, based on prevailing weather conditions, road
conditions and weather forecasts. It is emphasised that it is each person’s responsibility, staff or parent,
to decide what is safe. We are here to provide a service to the community and schools are criticized if we
prevent parents from going to work. Most of us expect the shops, banks and other services to be open
and if services are closed because of decisions that schools make we contribute to the problem. Often
parents have to take unpaid leave or a day’s holiday to supervise their children. Given that many of our
students can walk to school we will always aim to open but may have to offer a restricted timetable
because of the availability of teaching staff. Once open we will only close if the site becomes unsafe or
the weather worsens significantly.
We will always endeavour to let you know if the school is to be closed via our website but this decision may not be
made until 8am or later. However, the working assumption should be that school is open but as parents it is your
choice whether to send your child to school if the weather is bad.
Yours sincerely
Dr S M Tranter
Executive Headteacher
